DR G.L JAIN

Profile: Dr. Gendalal Jain
Poultry Breeding Visionary & Architect of India’s Indigenous Poultry Revolution
The Indian poultry fraternity mourns the passing of Dr. Gendalal Jain, a pioneering geneticist and visionary leader whose life’s work transformed poultry farming across India. Revered as the Father of Indigenous Poultry Breeding, Dr. Jain breathed his last recently, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape the future of sustainable poultry science and rural empowerment.
Academic Journey & Early Contributions
Dr. Jain graduated in Poultry Science in 1966 and began his career as an Assistant Professor at Udaipur University. He later earned his Ph.D. in Animal Breeding from the University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1971. Upon returning to India, he joined the Central Poultry Breeding Farm (Government of India) as Director, where he led successful breeding programs for White Leghorn (WHL) and Rhode Island Red (RIR) chickens, and established Random Sample Test Centres for both broilers and layers.
Industry Leadership & Genetic Breakthroughs
In 1980, Dr. Jain joined Venkateshwara Hatcheries Pvt. Ltd., Pune as Chief Geneticist. Over the next 35 years, he served as Managing Director of Venco Research and Breeding Farms, where he masterminded India’s most successful poultry breeding programs.
Recognizing the importance of genotype-environment interaction, Dr. Jain designed breeding protocols tailored to Indian climatic conditions, husbandry practices, and market demands. He redefined selection indices to suit Indian farmers—diverging from Western models—and developed strains that consistently outperformed imported breeds.
Landmark Achievements
- BV300 Layer Strain: Developed by Dr. Jain and his team, BV300 has dominated the Indian market for over four decades, commanding 85% market share despite competition from global breeds.
- Vencobb Broiler Strain: With consistent performance improvements, Vencobb has held 65–75% market share for over 30 years, becoming the backbone of India’s broiler industry.
- Cobb 100, 400, and 430: Dr. Jain’s work on these strains set new benchmarks in productivity and adaptability.
His breeding innovations enabled farmers to rear poultry in low-cost sheds using local materials, yet achieve standardized performance, thereby democratizing poultry farming across rural India.
Awards & Recognition
Dr. Jain’s contributions earned him numerous national and international honors, including:
- Lifetime Achievement Award – BV Rao Research Foundation (2001)
- M.S. Swaminathan Award – For excellence in agriculture and poultry science (2005)
- Scroll of Honour – Indian Poultry Science Association (2008)
- National R&D Awards – Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India (1990 for broilers, 1994 for layers)
- National Productivity Award – Government of India
He was among the few geneticists globally to have successfully led both layer and broiler breeding programs for over four decades. His research has been published widely and presented at international conferences, influencing poultry genetics worldwide.
Legacy & Impact
Dr. G.L. Jain’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy lives on in every poultry farm, every improved strain, and every farmer whose life was uplifted by his vision. His work empowered rural communities, strengthened food systems, and inspired generations of veterinarians, geneticists, and entrepreneurs.
In his honor, the Dr. G.L. Jain Award of Excellence in Poultry Science is presented annually on World Egg Day—celebrated this year on 10th October 2025—to recognize outstanding individuals advancing poultry science and enterprise in India.
