Dr. Sakkubai Ramachandran & Dr. N. Kalyani
India’s Pioneering Lady Veterinarians – Batch of 1952
In 1948, Madras Veterinary College admitted women for the first time to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science programme. From this historic batch emerged Dr. Sakkubai Ramachandran and Dr. N. Kalyani, among the very first qualified lady veterinarians of India who graduated in 1952 and went on to transform the landscape of veterinary science and animal healthcare services.
Dr. Sakkubai Ramachandran
Torchbearer of Women in Veterinary Science
Widely recognised as one of India’s earliest woman veterinarians, Dr. Sakkubai Ramachandran’s professional journey symbolised academic excellence, scientific leadership, and institutional integrity. At a time when veterinary science was overwhelmingly male-dominated, she demonstrated that women could excel in clinical services, research, and public veterinary administration with equal distinction.
Her Legacy Includes:
Opening pathways for increased female admissions in veterinary colleges
Demonstrating women’s capability in field practice and scientific research
Inspiring early professional networks of lady veterinarians
Strengthening long-term gender balance in veterinary education and services
Dr. N. Kalyani
Symbol of Courage, Compassion & Social Change
Graduating alongside Dr. Sakkubai in 1952, Dr. N. Kalyani stands as another towering figure of Indian veterinary history, remembered as a role model for rural and tribal girls aspiring to serve animals and communities. Her inspiring life later influenced the celebrated children’s book Secret Wild Vet Kalyani, portraying her adventurous spirit and deep empathy for animals in the Nilgiri hills.
