Dr. C. M. Singh: Architect of Indian Veterinary Science and Doyen of the Profession
Dr. Chinta Mani Singh (1922–2005) is widely revered as the founding architect of modern veterinary science in India. His visionary leadership, pioneering research, and institution-building efforts laid the foundation for a vibrant, self-reliant veterinary ecosystem that continues to shape the nation’s animal health and agricultural resilience.
Dr. C. M. Singh was the architect of modern Indian veterinary science, whose pioneering work in pathology, microbiology, education, and institution-building transformed the veterinary profession across India.
Scientific Contributions
Dr. Chinta Mani Singh was a globally respected veterinary pathologist and microbiologist. His research laid the foundation for understanding and diagnosing several critical animal diseases:
- Listeriosis, Salmonellosis, Mycoplasmosis, Bovine Lymphosarcoma, and Slow Viral Respiratory Diseases were among the conditions he studied in depth, contributing to their etio-pathogenesis and diagnostic protocols.
- He was instrumental in developing diagnostic tools and laboratory standards that improved disease surveillance and control in livestock, especially in rural India.
- His work bridged basic science with field application, ensuring that veterinary research directly benefited farmers and animal health workers.
Institutional Leadership
Dr. Singh’s legacy is most visible in the institutions he built and led:
- He was the first Indian Director of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar, where he modernized research infrastructure, expanded postgraduate programs, and fostered international collaborations
- As Vice Chancellor of DUVASU, Mathura, and other universities, he restructured veterinary curricula to include clinical training, extension education, and interdisciplinary research.
- He played a key role in establishing ICAR norms for veterinary education, helping standardize academic benchmarks across India.

- Dr. Singh was a mentor to generations of veterinary scientists, many of whom now lead national institutions.
