Veterinarians are frontline guardians of both animal well-being and public health, with their influence extending far beyond treating sick pets,Livestock and Wildlife.Their multifaceted role encompasses clinical expertise, surveillance, education, strong advocacy, animal welfare, public health and public policy engagement.Through their clinical expertise veterinarians provide prompt treatment for Livestock and pets.By the year around surveillance veterinarians prevent zoonotic diseases like Rabies,Avian Influenza and Brucellosis.Veterinarians facilitate the livestock farmers to aware about New scientific developments in Livestock farming and standards to be follow in Animal Welfare and public Health.

Animal Welfare

Veterinarians are daily treating Animals and attending emergencies and work as a frontline defenders of animal rights, tasked with preventing abuse, neglect, and cruelty. They often act as first responders in suspected cases of animal treatment providing emergency care, documenting evidence for legal cases, and collaborating with animal welfare authorities and police.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), veterinarians are key to ensuring animal welfare standards in farms, shelters, and zoos.In India, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, veterinarians are empowered to report cruelty cases and work alongside NGOs and enforcement agencies.

They promote enrich environments that fulfils animals’ behavioural and physiological needs.Responsible pet ownership, including proper feeding, preventive care, spaying/neutering.Humane husbandry in dairy, poultry, and meat production systems.

Disease Prevention and Control

Veterinarians play a pivotal role in preventing zoonotic diseases—those transmissible from animals to humans. Over 60% of emerging infectious diseases in humans originate from animals, according to the CDC and WHO.India alone sees highest human deaths/year from rabies, mainly due to dog bites. Mass dog vaccination and population control by veterinarians is essential. In One Health implementation Veterinarians collaborate with human doctors and environmental scientists to address cross-sector health threats like avian influenza, leptospirosis, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).Vets detect early warning signs, collect samples, trace transmission chains, and implement biosecurity protocols to halt disease spread.

Veterinary public health services ensure surveillance of transboundary animal diseases (TADs) like FMD and PPR, supporting national food security and trade.

Food Safety and Livestock Oversight

Veterinarians are key enforcers of food safety, protecting consumers from food-borne pathogens and drug residues.

Their duties include Pre- and post-mortem inspection at slaughterhouses.Monitoring for zoonotic infections like brucellosis, bovine tuberculosis, and cysticercosis.Ensuring withdrawal periods for antibiotics and anthelmintics to prevent chemical residues in milk, meat, and eggs.Enforcing regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and Department of Animal Husbandry.

Globally, FAO estimates that one in ten people fall ill every year due to unsafe food, and veterinarians are crucial to reducing this burden.

Ethical and Legal Responsibilities

Veterinarians are bound by a strict code of professional ethics, such as those outlined by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) or the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

They Prioritise animal welfare, informed consent, and humane euthanasia.Guide legislation on issues like puppy mills, live animal transport, animal experimentation, and exotic pet trade.Support judicial systems by offering expert opinions in cruelty, injury, or insurance-related cases

Their voice is essential in Drafting and revising animal protection laws.Advising on antimicrobial stewardship policies.Promoting public awareness on the interconnectedness of human and animal health.

Veterinarians and the One Health Ecosystem

Veterinarians embody the One Health philosophy, where animal health, human health, and environmental sustainability are interconnected.

They contribute to Climate resilience (e.g., advising on livestock adaptation strategies).Vector-borne disease control (e.g., tick-borne diseases, leishmaniasis).Sustainable agriculture (e.g., balancing productivity with ecological health).

With global challenges like AMR, pandemics, and climate change, the veterinarian’s role is more vital than ever.

Conclusion

Veterinarians are not just doctors for animals—they are educators, public health officers, policy advocates, and ethical leaders. Their daily actions influence the health of ecosystems, the quality of our food, and the safety of our communities. Recognising and investing in veterinary capacity is essential to building a healthy, humane, and sustainable future.
