Parrot is the most popular and loved bird among children. Apart from being beautiful with its bright coloured feathers and beak, it is considered to be one of the most intelligent among birds. However, there are more facts to a parrot than it being a bird with colourful plumes and its mimicry skills.

Parrots, also known as Psittacines, are birds of all colors that usually inhabit warmer climates and are found mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. Parrots come from three different families: the Psittacoidea, also known as the “true parrot;” Cacatuoidea, meaning “cockatoos,” and Strigopoidea (New Zealand parrots). In the visual spectrum, most parrots exhibit little or no sexual dimorphism.

Parrots are characterized by strong, curved beaks to crack hard nuts; a large head; strong zygodactyl feet with sharp claws for climbing and feeding; and a vision sensitive to ultraviolet light. World Parrot Day is celebrated every year on May 31 to raise awareness about parrots, promote their conservation and welfare and highlight the threats they face in the wild. It was established by the World Parrot Trust (WPT) in 2004.
