ABSTRACT

Fertility of postpartum period negativity influenced by incidence of anestrum. In the present case study 20 Holstein Friesian cross breed cows affected with post partum anestrus. These cows were treated by 150gm root of Radish with 100gm jaggery once daily for 14 days. All 20 cows are shows estral signs within 21days from initiation of the treatment.

Key words

Anestrum,Cow,Radish

Introduction

Anestrus is a broad term that indicates the lack of estrus expression at an expected time.High concentration of progesterone that have been present during pregnancy cause negative feedback suppression of the hypothalamic -pituitary axis with result that follicular activities in the ovaries of full term pregnant cow is minimal (Noakes et.al 2019). Failure of restoration of both gonadotropin secretion and ovarian follicular activity during expected postpartum period results Anovulatory anestrus. It is a multifactorial problem, which occurs in response to a range of management or nutritional deficiencies (Noakes et al 2019)

Case History and Observation

The twenty numbers of Holstein Friesian cross breed cows of age group is between four to eight years and different stage of calving in between first to fifth calving .All the.cows are around 350kg body weight. These animals were identified in and around koduvilarpatti village of Theni district in Tamilnadu state for this study. All the twenty animals does not express the estrum sign more than three months after parturition. All the animals were dewormed with broad spectrum antihelminth and proper balanced diet was given. On per rectal examination flaccid uterus and small, quiescent, flat smooth ovaries are observed.some cows had inactive ovaries that are devoid of any significant structure ie no palpable follicles or luteal structures.

Treatment and Results

These cows are treated by orally 150gm radish along with 100gm jaggery in paste form once daily for 14days.All cows showed estrus signs within twenty one days from the initiation of this treatment and breed.

Discussion

Normally cows in early lactation have negative energy balance.Fertility of post partum period negativity influenced by incidence of anestrum. This post partum anestrus mainly due to production stress and subclinical ketosis.

Raphanus Sativus (radish) has high nutritional and phytochemical potential.

In root of Radish flavonoids, especially anthocyanins are most studied and reported compounds.

Anthocyanins act as antioxidants by scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress(Noelia et al 2020)

Radishes are low calorie food that is rich in Vitamin C.They also impart micronutrients like folate, vitamin B6, vitamin k, vitamin A, potassium, manganese and calcium (Dolson 2022)

Root o radish along with jaggery paste reduces the production stress and correct the subclinical ketosis of these animals .so all these post partum anestrus cows came to estrum after  orally supplemented by root of Radish and Jaggery.

Summary

In the present study, use of root of Radish and Jaggery paste was found to be very effective in the  management of post partum anestrus in field condition

Acknowledgement

I express my deep sense of gratitude to Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary services, Tamilnadu for providing excellent facilities to treat these animals in a successful manner.
