INTRODUCTION:

The success of dairy cattle and buffalo husbandry depends on optimal reproductive rhythm of every female in the herd. It is estimated that around 18–40% cattle are culled per annum due to infertility or sterility in India. Infertility in general means a degree of reduced /delayed/ irregular desire or ability to mate, the capacity to conceive and to nourish an embryo, and finally, the power to expel a normal foetus and foetal membranes at the time of parturition. Conventional therapeutic approaches for reproductive disorders, including anoestrus, cystic ovarian disease, and postpartum uterine infections, predominantly involve the administration of hormonal agents or antimicrobial drugs. However, such interventions may necessitate withdrawal periods and raise concerns regarding residual contamination in animal-derived products. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), with particular emphasis on homeopathy, has gained attention as a mild yet potentially effective approach for the management of reproductive functions in animals.

The artist of healing—and thus Hahnemann—would have the right to abide by certain principles, but at the same time would also have the duty to disregard them—as far as the individual circumstances, that are irreducible to a simple scheme, would require it. The recognition of the latter aspect, the complexity and in computability of “our organism which is intimately connected with and in conflict with all parts of the universe had also been the starting point of Hahnemann’s practice. Only thus he could come to the assessment that under these conditions neither speculative classification of diseases nor crude empiricism nor natural scientific reductionism could help. What is therapeutically relevant, he concluded, may only be the signs and symptoms to which both expressions of diseases as well as effects of drugs are related, and thus may be matched to each other. Hippocrates would have reserved the right to apply the Principle of Similars—as a hermeneutic rule for appropriate treatments—on some occasions, and not on others, according to the individual case. Hahnemann, however, as a child of a time of rationalism and the romantic quest for the absolute, had become set on the claim to have found the only true way of healing by his re-formulation of the Principle of Similars. After a 200-year-discursive fixation of medicine on cognitive and theoretical aspects of medical science, the recent development in the theory of medicine may again offer a chance to emphasize and support the constitutive practical nature of any kind of healing art. Applied to homeopathy, this would mean to categorically distinguish on the one hand the practical instructions and maxims for the treatment of sick humans, which were found by Hahnemann by abduction and may be recursively scrutinized, i.e. confirmed, modified or discarded—in practice—anew with every patient; and on the other hand the theoretical models which Hahnemann be lived he had to establish in his day to approximate medicine to the ideal of an a priori certain cognitive science, an endeavor which was then deemed to be progressive. As a child of his time and under the spell of overheated controversies, Hahnemann was not beyond mixing or confounding these two spheres. From the perspective of theory of medicine, Hahnemann’s merit for medicine may consist much more in the practical foundation of a salutary method of healing than in his intended re-definition and re-combination of general theoretical principles and theories. Just as the lived and experienced practice of Christianity may rest on a few irrefutable basic maxims (commandment of love, mercy, forgiveness, etc.) that will retain their validity independent of the outcome of theological controversies on tenets and dogmas introduced by councils of the clergy (consubstantiality vs. homoiousios, eucharistic controversy, immaculate conception, etc.)—analogously also the lived and experienced practice of homeopathy should not be naively equated with Hahnemann’s theoretical models (artificial disease, biphasic effect of drugs, identity of symptoms and disease, etc.). Instead, both spheres should be analyzed and appreciated separately and understood in their context and interaction.

Homeopathy is based on the principles of similia similibus curentur (“like cures like”) and the ‘law of minimum dose,’ wherein highly diluted substances are purported to stimulate the organism’s intrinsic healing mechanisms (Schmidt, 2021). Homeopathy is increasingly being investigated in veterinary reproductive medicine as a holistic and non-invasive alternative or adjunct to conventional therapeutic modalities. It holds particular relevance in livestock production systems seeking to reduce pharmaceutical inputs or adhere to organic certification standards (Hektoen, 2005). Among homeopathic veterinary medicines, Fertigo is specifically formulated to improve conception rates in cattle by supporting hormonal balance, maintaining optimal pH for sperm motility and enhancing genital organ tone. It combines key remedies such as Aurum Metallicum, Apis Mellifica, Borax, Sepia, Murex Purpurea, Palladium and Agnus Castus, which target ovarian, uterine and reproductive health issues including infertility, repeat breeding, cysts and uterine atonicity. Fertigo is administered orally at a dose of 5 ml daily, either mixed with jaggery or water. Another preparation, Hit-O-Gen, is designed to regulate the estrous cycle and induce heat in anoestrus cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats, showing particular effectiveness in cases of physiological anoestrus and ovarian cystic disorders. Containing remedies such as Alteris Farinosa, Folliculinum, Oophorinum and Pituitary in 1M potency, Hit-O-Gen works to correct hormonal imbalance, stimulate reproductive activity and support ovarian and uterine function, with a recommended dosage of two tablets daily. Both Fertigo and Hit-O-Gen are available as OTC (over-the-counter) preparations, meaning they can be safely used without a veterinary prescription. Being non prescription, natural and free from side effects, they can be administered alongside other treatments, making them a dependable choice for restoring fertility and maintaining reproductive regularity in female animals (Chandel et al., 2009a). Remedies like Calcarea phosphorica, Aletris farinosa, Sepia, Pulsatilla, Oophorinum and Aurum muriaticum natronatum have been used individually or as complexes to stimulate ovarian function and induce estrus in cows and buffaloes with true anestrus or ovarian inactivity.

Common dosage forms include oral tablets, liquid preparations (drops or drenches), and parenteral formulations administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular routes, typically over a treatment duration of 5–21 days. These homeopathic interventions are proposed to influence reproductive physiology through modulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis, restoration of ovarian cyclicity, enhancement of circulating estradiol and progesterone concentrations, and improvement in mineral metabolism. Comparative studies have reported that homeopathic therapies may exhibit efficacy comparable to or exceeding that of herbal and hormonal treatments, particularly when integrated with appropriate nutritional supplementation and parasite control strategies (Riley et al., 2001). The broad therapeutic applications of homeopathy in reproductive management, coupled with its minimal risk profile, make it a valuable adjunct in holistic herd fertility programs.

Systemic Mechanisms and Broad-Spectrum Applications in Female Fertility Management

A study was conducted to scientifically evaluate a homeopathic complex in the treatment of true anoestrus, in which crossbred cows diagnosed with ovarian inactivity received a formulation containing Calcarea phosphorica 30C,  Aletris farinosa 30C, Pulsatilla 30C, Aurum muriaticum natronatum 30C, Sepia 30C and Phosphorus 30C. The remedy was administered orally in equal proportion (15 pills twice daily) over a 10-day period (Rajkumar et al., 2006). All treated animals showed estrus signs and responded positively to breeding with a conception rate of 54.5%. A notable increase in serum estradiol levels was observed post-treatment, contrasting with the relatively stable levels in the non-treated group (Rajkumar et al., 2006). Kumar et al. (2004) found that the remedy induced estrus in 68% of postpartum acyclic cows and 50% of buffaloes. These findings suggest that the homeopathic combination may have influenced the hypothalamic pituitary-gonadal axis, thereby restoring ovarian cyclicity and promoting estrus expression.

Muratbayev et al. (2018) demonstrated effective treatment of ovarian cysts and hypovarianism using a combination of Gabivit, Liarsin and Ovariovit. Gabivit is a vitamin preparation that likely contains B-complex vitamins along with vitamins A, D and E. It plays a crucial role in supporting metabolism, improving energy balance and enhancing reproductive health in cows. Gabivit is particularly beneficial in correcting metabolic disorders that may contribute to ovarian inactivity. The recommended dosage is 15 ml administered either intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SC), with a treatment course of 1 to 3 injections given at 5 day intervals. Ovariovit is also useful in managing ovarian dysfunction like follicular ovarian cysts and persistent corpus luteum. Its mechanism of action is based on improving the endocrine regulation of the reproductive system, supporting follicular development, ovulation and luteolysis. In cows diagnosed with ovarian cysts, Ovariovit and Liarsin  are commonly used as part of a supportive homeopathic treatment strategy to regulate ovarian function and promote the resolution of cystic structures. Ovariovit is administered at a dose of 5 ml once a week, with a treatment course consisting of 3 to 4 injections, depending on the cow’s response. Liarsin  is also administered at a dose of 5 ml which works synergistically to promote ovarian recovery, regulate estrous cycles and improve overall reproductive performance. The biological activity of homeopathic remedies extends beyond observable reproductive outcomes and into cellular function. Aziz et al. (2012) investigated the effect of two homeopathic complexes, Ubichinon compositum® (Ubi comp) and Coenzyme compositum ad us. vet.® (CoQ10 comp), on bovine sperm function. A HEPES-0.1% BSA solution was used to dilute the semen samples. For each tested complex, two dilutions were prepared: 1:9 and 1:4 (drug: HEPES–BSA, v/v). Their findings revealed enhanced mitochondrial activity, a key factor in sperm motility and fertilizing capacity, without detrimental effects on sperm viability, chromatin structure, or acrosomal integrity. This highlights a potential application of homeopathy in improving sperm bioenergetics, particularly relevant for artificial insemination programs.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, homeopathy represents a potentially valuable adjunctive strategy for enhancing reproductive performance in both female and male livestock. Its proposed mechanisms—encompassing regulation of endocrine function, immune-modulation and optimization of cellular metabolic processes—support a systemic approach to fertility restoration. Reported outcomes, including improved estrus expression, ovarian activity, semen characteristics and sperm viability, suggest a broad spectrum of biological effects. Additionally, its favorable safety profile, cost-effectiveness and field applicability support its inclusion within integrated herd health management systems. However, variability in therapeutic responses necessitates cautious interpretation. Continued well-designed, controlled investigations are essential to elucidate underlying mechanisms and substantiate clinical efficacy. Overall, homeopathy may offer a sustainable and complementary modality within contemporary reproductive management frameworks.
