ABSTRACT:-

In the present case study, a Holstein cross breed cow, third calving which was brought for artificial insemination. On rectal examination showed a unilateral. Bartholin gland cyst on the right side of the vagina. Palpation of the cyst, felt stones inside. Exploratory sterile puncture with BP blade was revealed presence, of clear viscid fluid with stones in the cyst. Remove the all stones in the cyst and painted the opened cyst with tincture iodine. Unevenful recovery showed within a day.

KEY WARDS:-

Unilateral bartholin cyst. Cow

INTRODUCTION:-

The vulvovaginal gland of cow named as Bartholian gland. There are two in number, one on each side located in constrictor muscles of the vestibule. In cow each glands open to lateral wall of vestibule 2-3c.m caudal to vagina by single duct. The Bartholin gland secretes mucus which was very active under the influence of estrogen (Marzano DA, Haefner HK 2004 and Roberts SJ 1986).
The bartholin gland secretion contain sialic acid, glycidic radicals and both neutral and sulfated mucins. The activity of bartholin gland can be regulated by hormones produced by neuroendocrine cells by serotonin and somatostatin. The mechanical stimulation of bartholin glands normally occurs during coitus can induce the secretion of serotonin by neuroendocrine cells of glands (Russo F, Vittoria A 2006).
The gland may enlarge due to accumulation of fluid, formation of retention cyst arising from an artesia or obstruction of the duct of the gland which has usually open on the lateral wall of the vestibule at the vulva – vaginal border and occlusive lesion of the duct, as in metaplasia of the lining epithelium associated with chronic hyper estrogenism in cows. Estrogen hormone in chronic phase induce characteristic lesions of squamous metaplasia in the glandular tissue of bartholin glands (Groot MS 2006).

HISTORY AND OBSERVATION:-

A Holstein cross breed cow with 3rd calving, calved 60 days back which was brought for artificial insemination. On rectal examination a round enlargement covered with vaginal mucosa was noted protruding between the vulvar lips. Palpation showed the cystic wall was thin and well supplied with blood vessels. The swelling was soft fluctuating and no pain on palpation and also felt stones inside the cyst.

TREATMENT:-

Exploratory sterile puncture with BP blade was revealed presence of clear viscid fluid with stones in the cyst. The volume of fluid around 70ml. Then clear the all stones inside the cyst thro small incision and painting the opened cyst with tincture iodine. Uneventful recovery showed within a day.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:-

I express my deep sense of gratitude of director of animal husbandry and veterinary services for providing the excellent facilities to treat this cow in a successful manner.
